A partnership between Mindray and Collectives for Integrated Livelihood Initiatives (CInI) - an Initiative of Tata Trusts - was formalised for three months (April 2022 to June 2022) project period for strengthening of CInI’s ongoing project – “Strengthening Education Standard in Schools of Halol Block, Panchmahal District-Gujarat.” The focus was on strengthening the educational foundation especially in the space of improving the ambience of the schools through the concept of buildings as learning assistance (BALA) which was executed in 3 ways.
\r\n"}}" id="text-79af8b9a94" class="8f00b2 cmp-text">The project area (Halol Block of Panchmahal district) is a semi-arid predominantly tribal region where more than 94% of the farmers are marginal, living at subsistence levels. Agriculture, mainly rain fed, is a major occupation of the people followed by animal husbandry. The profile and geographical challenges had an adverse impact on livelihoods of the farmers including education and health. Headmasters and teachers of the area have shown willingness to put additional efforts and improve the teaching pedagogy in the schools as well as introduce more grade appropriate teaching and learning materials as well in order to improve the reading and learning skills of the children.

This initiative helped the school to attract students thereby optimizing their attendance and the pictorial surrounding filled with educational concepts made learning easier and interesting for the students. Out of the 6 schools, 1 school is remotely placed, the teachers from that school and local primary education administration were appreciative of the efforts of the initiative. Parents from the have given very positive feedback on how “BALA” painting and library strengthening as interventions meant a lot for them.
\r\n"}}" id="text-908f0142c7" class="8f00b2 cmp-text">- Mindray and CInI developed an attractive library space to develop reading culture and enhance reading abilities among children. In consultation with Parag Library (Tata) it selected, identified and procured grade appropriate(1st-8th) library books consisting of story,fiction, non-fiction , poetry and science. 200 books and 2 bookshelves have been provided to each school to facilitate learning with joy among young children.
- Enhancing the ambience of schools through print rich environment and “BALA” (Building as Learning Asisstance) painting in the schools where children can interact with different forms of print which Mindray finalised with the stakeholders such as drawing of mathematical concepts, alphabets, pictures, puzzles and key general knowledge information etc.
- Strengthening the foundational literacy and numeracy of the children through hand-holding support to the teachers and teachers’ capacity building. Interactive sessions like Book Talk, Read a Loud, Art and Craft and Shared reading etc. were held during the vacation period with the young students.

\r\n"}}" id="text-4f7abce063" class="8f00b2 cmp-text">CInI has already been working in raising the bar of quality of life for the members of the Halol community with ongoing project – “Strengthening Education Standard in Schools of Halol Block, Panchmahal District-Gujarat.” It has helped to mobilise the women members of the communities and bring them together in the past with institutional forms like SHGs, initiate different program interventions aimed at improving the agriculture-based livelihoods of the households.
